Why SageWalk Coaching and Aftercare Services?

Coaching is defined as inspiring an individual or family to produce a desired result through personalized teaching, expanding awareness and designing environments.

For many reasons students and parents need and have asked for continuing support for effective change and transition.

Coaching and Aftercare Services is the next logical step for a student having successfully completed our Family Reunification Program. From our perspective there are three levels of graduates. A few who will do well on their own automatically and need little coaching, ones who will need continuing therapeutic treatment (generally in boarding schools and residential programs), and representing the largest group of all, graduates who will benefit from ongoing coaching support.

A new perspective

Our students tend to be bright, verbal and manipulative. Many are abusing substances. For whatever reason, most are unwilling to cooperate within the boundaries requested of them in a family, educational or social context. So from a reactive position, the majority of us focus on what is not working in our children’s behavior, not what is working.

Therefore, most of our students have been pinched, prodded, poked and tested to discover every reason conceivable to mankind that might shed some light on why our students behave the way they do.

SageWalk, the Wilderness School , among others, has been able to identify many of these reasons and helps our students learn and create new ways of healthy expression. These new pathways are powerful yet fragile until they are successfully proven and accepted.

We become accountability partners.

Our Family Coaching & Aftercare program is about

  • Continuing support and understanding
  • Discovering new ways of doing things
  • Enjoying and appreciating each other
  • Increasing personal power

Coaching is not therapy. The role of coach is not that of a counselor. It stands alone for effective aftercare yet complements continuing therapy and treatment depending on individual needs and program recommendations.

While at SageWalk, parents and graduates discovered how certain patterns created most of their difficulties. These patterns can still survive and undermine the student’s successful transition back home. This involves understanding the influence of family, friends, school, and community.

We assist families in changing the past into a new future using the tools and insight gained while enrolled in SageWalk.

This is done by becoming a co-creative accountability partner.

SageWalk’s aftercare program components:

  1. Graduation Seminar- two day includes family assessment, parenting strategies, development of a family transitional plan , and graduation ceremony.
  2. Individually scheduled calls with parents and students for six months. Bi-weekly for four months and then as needed.
  3. Support in strategizing how to successfully implement and maintain SageWalk’s therapeutic recommendations.
  4. Individual planning and goal setting.

Feedback from our parents and students indicate they appreciate the refreshing approach of focusing on what is working and positive reinforcement.

Our aftercare focus is about developing mature, powerful and successful students while developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
